Klaviyo vs Shopify Email: Pros & Cons

Email is the Jason Bourne of online marketing, it’s always coming back, stronger every time.

When it comes to email marketing for your Shopify store, you have lots of options to consider. If you’ve landed here, I’d bet that the Klaviyo has been mentioned to you already. But you may have also heard about the built in native freebie option - Shopify Email (actually renamed recently to Messaging).

Shopify Email launched in 2019 and rolled out globally in 2020. It offers a simple, cost-effective starting point that lives right inside your Shopify dashboard. Klaviyo, on the other hand, has been built specifically for ecommerce since 2012, and brings significantly more power in areas like automation, segmentation, A/B testing, and multi-channel marketing, including a native integration with Meta ads that Shopify Email simply can't match.

So which one is right for your store? The honest answer depends on where your business is right now, and where you're planning to take it. To help you decide, as I do with all lifes important decisions, I’ve created a Pro’s and Con’s list.

Shopify Email

Pros

  • Built directly into the Shopify dashboard, no extra login, no switching between platforms, and a clean familiar interface that feels like an extension of the store.

  • Free for the first 10,000 emails sent per month, then $1 per 1,000 emails beyond that. Hard to beat for very small or early-stage stores.

  • Has a simple drag-and-drop editor with one-click automations and pre-built templates that pull in store branding, products, and pricing.

  • Covers the essentials: abandoned cart reminders, welcome emails, and thank-you emails after purchase.

Cons

  • Features like A/B testing, SMS marketing, and CRM tools aren't built in, you'd need third-party apps, which means additional costs and setup.

  • Segmentation is limited to quick pre-made segments, not advanced custom targeting.

  • No native SMS/push notifications, you'd need to connect a separate tool.

  • The free email limit counts emails sent, not contacts so with even a modest list sending multiple flows, you can exceed it quickly.

  • Doesn’t directly integrate with Meta Ads and Custom Audiences

Klaviyo

Pros

  • Built-in A/B testing across subject lines, content, send times, and design with analytics that feed back into ongoing optimisation.

  • Advanced automation analytics give detailed performance metrics at each step of a workflow, opens, clicks, conversions, and revenue attribution throughout the customer journey.

  • Multi-channel out of the box, SMS, push notifications, and email are all native, so you can trigger the right channel at the right time without stitching tools together.

  • Connects with 350+ integrations including review platforms, loyalty programs, and ad platforms, enabling workflows Shopify Email simply can't replicate.

  • Shopify itself invested $100M in Klaviyo in 2022 and made it the recommended email solution for Shopify Plus, which says a lot about where the platform is headed long-term.

  • Klaviyo automates revenue-generating touch-points like browse abandonment, multi-step cart recovery sequences, and win-back campaigns that Shopify Email doesn't cover.

Cons

  • Cost, it scales with your list size and can run into hundreds per month for larger lists.

  • Steeper learning curve compared to Shopify Email.

  • AI content tools only generate text in English, which is a limitation for multilingual stores.

The Bottom Line

If you are just starting out and need low-cost, straightforward campaigns, and automations, Shopify Email can be a good launching platform. If you’re planning to scale and need advanced marketing features, Klaviyo is the clear winner despite the higher cost. Although keeping on top of your unengaged profiles can help maintain a clean and engaged audience.

Shopify Email is a fine starting point, but most stores worth investing in will hit its ceiling fairly quickly particularly around segmentation, automation depth, and SMS. Klaviyo is where the serious retention revenue lives.
